Aligners move teeth; veneers change the visible front surfaces. The difference is central to choosing an approach.
Identify the underlying issue
A tooth can look crooked because of its position, its shape, uneven wear, or neighboring teeth. Ask which explanation fits your mouth and whether the bite also needs correction. Invisalign may change alignment over a course of treatment; a veneer can disguise certain appearance concerns without moving the root or correcting the underlying relationship.
Compare what changes
Veneers cover the front of a tooth and often involve removing some enamel. The ADA emphasizes that this preparation is generally irreversible. Aligners apply controlled pressure to move teeth and require a high wear commitment followed by retention. Neither route is a universal shortcut: a severely rotated tooth or bite problem may need orthodontic assessment, while a misshapen tooth may still need restorative shaping after movement.
Consider tooth health and materials
Ask whether the teeth and gums are healthy enough for either plan. If an old filling, discolored tooth, or chip contributes to the appearance, discuss how it would be addressed. Veneers can chip, loosen, or need replacement; aligner teeth can shift without appropriate retainers. These future obligations belong in the decision alongside the initial result.
Ask for a staged alternative
Sometimes the useful comparison is not one service versus the other but a smaller amount of tooth movement followed by limited bonding or whitening. Ask the dentist to show which concerns each step would solve and which teeth would remain untouched. Do not infer that the practice recommends a combination for every patient merely because it offers both services.
Questions to ask
Can veneers straighten teeth?
They can change the apparent shape, but they do not move teeth or correct a bite.
Is aligner treatment irreversible?
Tooth movement requires long-term retention; compare that commitment with enamel removal for veneers.
Could both be discussed?
Yes. An examination can show whether a staged plan addresses different concerns.
